Respirator Fit Testing & Hearing Protector Fit Checks

On-site qualitative and quantitative fit testing for tight-fitting respirators and hearing protectors. Small groups and individuals welcome. Johor, Klang Valley and nationwide on request.

Why Fit Testing Matters

PPE must "fit the employees" — that is the law. A respirator or earplug that does not seal is not protecting the wearer, and the employer remains exposed to enforcement action.

USECHH Regulation 16(3)(b)

Employers must ensure respiratory protective equipment "fit the employees". The DOSH guideline on PPE against chemical hazards says tight-fitting respirators should be fit tested before first use, when a different facepiece (size, style, model or make) is used, and at least annually.

Noise ICOP 2019, Section 11.2.6

Individual fitting of hearing protectors is to be checked. Annual training on proper use, fitting, care and maintenance is required where the noise exposure limit is exceeded.

Enforcement Reality

DOSH inspectors can ask to see fit-test records during audits. A test record per person — name, make/model/size, method, result and date — is the simplest way to demonstrate compliance.

Respirator Fit Testing

We provide both qualitative and quantitative fit testing in full, so you can choose the method that matches your equipment and budget.

Qualitative Fit Testing

  • Taste or smell agent method (saccharin or Bitrex)
  • Banana oil method for organic-vapour cartridges only
  • Pass/fail result per person
  • Quick, portable, no powered equipment needed
  • Ideal for most half-face and full-face respirators

Quantitative Fit Testing

  • Uses specialised equipment and a trained technician
  • Measures actual particles inside and outside the facepiece
  • Numerical fit factor recorded per person
  • Required for some high-hazard environments
  • Recommended where qualitative methods are inconclusive

Earplug / Hearing Protector Fit Checks

Hearing protectors must be DOSH-approved, individually fitted, and checked for proper insertion and seal.

Individual Fitting Check

We check each worker's hearing protector for correct insertion, seal, and comfort. This covers earplugs, earmuffs, and custom-moulded options where available.

Annual Training

Where the noise exposure limit is exceeded, annual training on use, fitting, care and maintenance is required under the Noise Exposure Regulations 2019 and the Noise ICOP 2019.

DOSH-Approved Protectors

Hearing protectors supplied must be DOSH-approved. We can advise on suitable makes and models for your noise levels and advise on the Hearing Conservation Programme records you need to keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often must a respirator fit test be repeated?

DOSH guidelines recommend fit testing before first use, when a different facepiece is used, and at least annually thereafter. Naja Safety records a recommended re-test date on every certificate.

Do I need a fit test if I change mask model or size?

Yes. A new fit test is required whenever a different facepiece size, style, model or make is used, because each design seals differently against the face.

Is a fit test the same as a user seal check?

No. A user seal check is a quick pre-use check the wearer does themselves each time. A fit test is a formal, documented procedure using a qualitative or quantitative method to verify the facepiece seals adequately to the individual's face.

How long does a fit-testing session take?

It depends on group size and the method used. A single qualitative test typically takes 15–20 minutes per person; quantitative tests take slightly longer. Naja Safety schedules sessions to minimise downtime.

Can you test one or two people?

Yes. Small groups and single persons are welcome. We regularly run individual and two-person sessions for clients in the Klang Valley and Johor.
